Items such as mugs, pens, notepads and magnets are used and in your face every day. And as intelligent human beings we can’t help but read what’s on these items over and over as we use them. So make sure you are “branding” YOUR company name and get it in everyone’s face too! Sure mugs and magnets sometimes can be costly. But pens and notepads, bought in bulk can be fairly cheap. Purchase as large of a quantity of your preferred item that you can and your cost per item will drop. Of course it may be all tax deductible for your business too. If you can, choose items that are pertinent to your business. For example, if you are a layer, pens and notepads work. If you own a restaurant, use refrigerator magnets, mugs, even sets of napkins or little paperboard coasters!
If you can’t afford to purchase any items with your current budget right now, try creating your own givaways. Our website offers free recipes so we have created a set of preprinted recipe cards with our website information on them so they can be handed out as “free recipe cards” instead of business cards. You can print something like this on your own desktop printer or you can go to any quickie print shop in your town. So you are actually giving out “gifts” (which of course everyone loves) rather than handing people a business card that says “call me when you’re ready to spend your money”. Therefore they are much more well received by others. And of course, business cards get tucked away somewhere so there is no continual branding (getting your business name seen and memorized) going on, unlike items used on a daily basis. There are tons of companies that sell these types of promotional items. And some larger companies that you may be a Consultant or Distributor for, offer locations for their consultants to purchase items at a discounted price because of their bulk buying power. So do your homework and compare prices. You may find that something like this is more in your budget than you thought. And depending on the cost of your services or products you offer, getting one or two sales from this promotional method may actually pay for all of the items you purchased. Then once your customer makes a purchase, go ahead and give them a business card. Now they know about and have used your service, so when they’re ready to buy from you again they know who to contact for your particular service. They will then dive into their wallets, or piles and dig out your card, or more than likely, they’ve put your card up on their refrigerator at this point in time (get some magnetic business cards and this is sure to happen). Plus, your customer is now in the position to send referrals your way, so be sure to give them more than one business card.
