Chat Rooms on the Internet can be Dangerous for Your Children

Make sure you know what your kids are doing online at all times.

Chat rooms and message boards are Internet locations allowing live and interactive conversations between two or more computer users instantly. They can be in the same town or across the world. Chat rooms can be very enticing for children because of the instant communication. Most parents do not understand that this “interactivity” in playing games, entering contests and filling out surveys can place their children in harm’s way.

Privacy is the right to be free from outside intrusions and to have control over our own personal information. In the world of the Internet, many adults and young people don’t know how to protect this valuable commodity.

How Can Your Child’s Privacy Be Invaded?

Through filling out forms and entering contests on commercial websites.
By providing personal information when they register for file-sharing, instant message, email, etc. programs.
By completing personal profiles for an email or instant messaging account.
By giving personal information to strangers in chat rooms or through instant messaging.
Personal information includes: name, age, school, phone numbers, address, etc. Even something as simple as their school colors.

Pedophiles use online services to meet young children and teens by posing as a teen and then arranging a face-to-face meeting. Your child may think they are communicating with another 12 year old boy or girl when it actually is a 40 year old man.

The first question usually asked of someone entering a chat room is: A/S/L — age, sex and location.
Revealing personal information to a stranger met in a chat room can lead to “cyber stalking”, receiving pornography from this person, or even being pressured to arrange a personal face-to-face meeting.
Warn your children about becoming too comfortable about submitting information as a regular part of online activities. Many times a child will not stop to think about sharing personal information when they are in a risky online environment. The other person can make them feel safe when they are not.

What Can You Do To Protect Your Child?

Teach your kids the value of their personal information. Start when they are young.
Read the privacy policies on the websites that your kids visit.
Encourage your child to use gender-neutral nicknames, so no one can tell whether they are male or female.
Tell them to NEVER send pictures of themselves to anyone.
Choose chat rooms on children’s websites that use adult monitors restricting users from releasing personal information.
Encourage your children to NEVER let anyone lure them out of the public Internet area into a “private room” where the chat is not seen by anyone else.

Chat rooms can be fun for children, but it is up to the parent to make sure they have entered a safe environment!
